The 1985 Proof Set saw a large jump in total mintage from the prior year. The increase was over 600,000 sets. The likely reason for the increase was the lack of a Prestige Set offering during 1985. Since this expanded proof set offering was not available, the only option collectors had available was the standard set.
The set contained the same five coins as customary: Kennedy Half, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. All coins were minted at the San Francisco Mint with the "S" mint mark. Nearly all proof coins encountered will have deep cameo finishes. Some sets in original packaging may sometimes be found with hazy toning.
The packaging for the 1985 Proof Set continued the new style established in the prior year. The five coins were placed within individual holes in textured purple cardboard holder sealed in a plastic holder. This was placed in a purple colored outer box with silver printing. The box opened by way of a flap so the plastic holder could slide out.
