1986 Proof Set (BUY)
Face Value: $0.91
Original Issue Price: $11.00
Mintage: 2,411,180
The 1986 Proof Set recorded the lowest proof set mintage for all of the 1970's and 1980's. Interestingly, the low mintage was set directly aftrer a significant uptick in mintage figures experienced in the prior year. The set usually carries a slight premium as a result of the low mintage.
Each set contains five coins with a face value of 91 cents. The five coins included the Kennedy Half, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. Nearly all 1986 proof coins encountered will have a deep cameo proof finish.
The US Mint also offered the 1986 Prestige Proof Set. This expanded set contained the State of Liberty Half Dollar and Dollar coins in addition to the five coins included in the regular set. The Prestige Set was priced at $48.50 and had a mintage of 599,317.
The packaging for the standard 1986 Proof Set remained unchanged from the prior year. The five coins were placed within individual holes in purple cardboard holder. This was sealed between two plastic lenses to form a single holder. A purple colored outer box with silver printing contained the holder.
