The 1989 Proof Set was the final proof set for the 1980's. The mintage remained relatively steady at the 2 million set level. Each set contained five coins: the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. Coins are generally found with deep cameo finishes.
The US Mint offered a 1989 Prestige Proof Set, which was an expanded version of the regular proof set. This larger set contained the Congressional Half Dollar and Dollar Commemorative Coins. The 1989 Prestige Proof Set was priced at $45.00 and sold 211,807 units.
The proof set packaging remained unchanged for 1989. The coins were held within individual holes of a purple cardboard holder. These were sealed into a single plastic lens, housed in a purple cardboard box.
