The 1978 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) once again contained six coins with a face value of $1.91. The sets were priced at a relatively high premium with an offering price of $9.00 from the United States Mint.
The set contained the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. Notably, this was the final year of issue for the large sized dollar coin. The following year would see the debut of the small size dollar coin.
The quality of the coins found in 1978 Proof Sets is generally excellent. Nearly all coins encountered will have deep cameo finishes. Some 1978 Proof coins have received perfect grades of PR70DCAM or PF 70 Ultra Cameo from PCGS or NGC.
The packaging for the 1978 Proof Set was the same plastic holder with a black outer lid. The plastic was placed in a black cardboard box with the words printed “United States Proof Set 1978.”
