The 2009 Proof Set saw the number of coins included in the set rise once again. Now there were a total of eighteen coins included in the standard set. The increase was related to the new District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters program, which featured six quarter designs, and the 2009 Lincoln Cents, which featured four designs. The price of the set was raised by $3 to $29.95 to account for the increased number of coins in the set.
The 2009 Proof Set contained six quarters honoring the District of Columbia and US Territories. The quarters were the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Four different 2009 Lincoln Cent designs are included featuring his Birthplace, Formative Years, Professional Life, and Presidency. These cents are struck in a special composition of 95% copper. The four Presidential Dollars for the year honor William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor. The final pieces of the set are the Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Sacagawea Dollar.
The US Mint offered several different annual sets separately. This included the 2009 DC & US Territories Quarters Proof Set, 2009 Presidential Dollars Proof Set, Silver Proof Set, and 2009 DC & US Territories Silver Proof Set.
The packaging for the 2009 Proof Set was redesigned following the completion of the State Quarters series. Four separate lenses contained the proof coins. These were all placed within a single cardboard box. It bore the US Mint logo and states "2009 United States Mint Proof Set." A certificate of authenticity is included with each set.
