In 1998 Silver Proof Set was the final five coin silver proof set issued before it expanded to nine coins in the following year. This year also marked the last year of the Washington Quarter, as it had been issued since 1932. The design would change in the following year, the obverse redesigned and the reverse featuring different states for the State Quarters series.
The 1998 Silver Proof Set contained 90% silver versions of the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, and Roosevelt Dime. The Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Cent included within the set carried their standard compositions. All coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint and bore the "S" mint mark.
The US Mint once again issued a 1998 Premier Silver Proof Set. This would be the final year for this format. The premier format featured special packaging which allowed the coins to be more prominently displayed. The sets were priced at $37.50 and sold 240,658 units. This was a big jump from the prior year, with the increase likely attributable to the absence of the Prestige format proof set.
The 1998 Silver Proof Set packaging represented the final year of the black box style format. The packaging would be redesigned the following year for the inclusion of the State Quarters.
