The 2001 Proof Set continued the issuance of the coins of the State Quarters series and marked the second year for the Sacagawea Golden Dollar. After exceeding the 3 million set sales mark in the prior year, the 2001 set sold just 2,294,909 sets. This set usually sells for a premium on the secondary market.
The 2001 Proof Set contains a total of ten coins. This includes the New York Quarter, North Carolina Quarter, Rhode Island Quarter, Vermont Quarter, Kentucky Quarter, Sacagawea Dollar, Kennedy Half Dollar, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. These proof coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint, typically in deep cameo proof. The coins carry the "S" mint mark.
This year, the US Mint offered a total of three different proof set options for collectors. The US Mint offered the State Quarter Proof Set, Silver Proof Set, and the regular (clad) Proof Set.
The packaging for the 2001 Proof Set is themed in blue. The dollar, half dollar, dime, nickel, and cent are sealed in one plastic lens, with the five State Quarters in a separate lens. These two lenses are placed in a cardboard box. The same basic design had been used since the start of the State Quarter series in 1999.
