In 1992, the US Mint expanded their proof set offerings. One of the new offerings was the 1992 Silver Proof Set. This coin included coins struck with the 90% silver composition used in coins prior to the switch to clad based composition. The Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, and Roosevelt Dime were all struck with the silver composition. The remaining Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Cent had the same composition as the coins in the regular 1992 Proof Set.

The US Mint also offered a so called 1992 Silver Premier Set. This set contained the same coins as the 1992 Silver Proof Set, but the packaging was more ornate. This set was priced at $37.00 and sold 308,055 sets.

The Silver Proof Set proved to be a popular offering with sales of over one million sets. Interestingly, sales of the regular proof sets did not diminish. Collectors appeared to be buying both the regular proof set and the silver proof set for the year.

The packaging for the 1992 Silver Proof Set was themed in black, but otherwise similar to the packaging for the regular set. The coins were placed in individual spaces in a black cardboard. This was sealed within a plastic lens with the word "Silver" imprinted. The outer box was black and had silver printing "United States Mint Silver Proof Set 1992".
