The 2005 Proof Set was the second year that the annual proof set contained contained 11 coins. The increased number of coins was due to the State Quarter series, which issued five quarters, and the Westward Journey series, which issued two nickels. The mintage for the 2005 Proof Set saw a big jump from the prior year. Sales above the 2 million mark would continue for one more year before they resumed their downward slant.
The 2005 Proof Set includes five State Quarters honoring California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia. The two Westward Journey Nickels featured the American Bison and the Ocean in View. The remaining coins are the Sacagawea Dollar, Kennedy Half Dollar, Roosevelt Dime, and Lincoln Cent.
Separately the US Mint offered a set of the five State Quarters. This separate set was priced at $15.95. Additional sets also included the annual Silver Proof Set and Silver State Quarters Set.
The packaging for the 2005 Proof Set remained similar to the recent prior years. The Statue of Liberty appears with the United States Mint logo on blue themed colors. The coins are placed in two separate lenses, the State Quarters in one, and the remaining coins in another. Each set came with a certificate of authenticity.
