The 1990 Proof Set contained proof versions of the five coins issued for circulation that year. This included the Kennedy Half, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. Each coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint and carried the "S" mint mark. The mintage for the 1990 Proof Set declined under the 3 million level for the first time since the mid-1970's with only 2,793,433 sets sold to the public.
The US Mint offered a 1990 Prestige Proof Set, which saw its mintage swell from the prior year. The set contained the 1990 Eisenhower Dollar Commemorative Coin, which was a popular issue. The 1990 Prestige Proof Set was priced at $45.00 and sold 506,126 units.
Some of the 1990 Proof Sets contain a 1990 "No S" Lincoln Cent. This Lincoln Cent does not contain the mint mark and was created when the Philadelphia Mint failed to add the mark to the obverse dies sent to the San Francisco Mint for production. There are an estimated 3,500 1990 Proof Lincoln Cents without the "S" mint mark.
The proof set packaging remained unchanged for 1990 from the prior year. Coins were placed within individual holes of a purple cardboard holder. These were sealed into a single plastic lens, housed in a purple cardboard box. The box had silver printing "United States Mint Proof Set 1990".
