The 2003 Proof Set included a total of ten coins. All coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint and carry the "S" mint mark. Nearly all sets will contain coins with a deep cameo proof finish. The mintage for this year's set showed a slight decline from the prior year.
The 2003 Proof Set contained the five State Quarters honoring Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. In addition the set contained the Sacagawea Golden Dollar, Kennedy Half Dollar, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. The entire set or individual proof coins can all be acquired at relatively affordable prices.
The US Mint issued two other proof sets for collectors in addition to the standard set. The other sets included a separate State Quarters Proof set, which only contained the five quarters, and a Silver Proof Set, which contained 90% silver coins.
The packaging for the 2003 Proof Set remained similar in design to all years since the State Quarters series began. The dollar, half dollar, dime, nickel, and cent are sealed in one plastic lens, with the five State Quarters in a separate lens. These two lenses are placed in a cardboard box with an image of the Statue of Liberty and a blue color scheme. The outside of the box indicates the contents.
