The 1974 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) was the second year that the new Eisenhower Dollar was included. The sets contained a total of six coins, comprised of an Eisenhower Dollar, Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. The issue price of the sets remained at $7.00, for the Proof coins with a face value of $1.91.
The 1974-S Eisenhower Dollar contained in the set has a copper nickel clad composition. The U.S. Mint continued to offer a version struck in 40% silver as a separate option.
Generally, cameo and deep cameo coins are much easier to find in Proof Sets from this date onwards. Particularly choice examples can still be challenging to acquire, especially for the Lincoln Cent, which tends to sometimes discolor or acquire spots.
The new style packaging was used once again. Each coin was sealed in a separate plastic ring with a red felt insert. The ensemble was placed in a black plastic outer holder, which opens and closes to examine the coins. The outer box was black cardboard and states “United States Proof Set 1974.”
