1983 Proof Set

The 1983 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) contained five different coins. The bronze token, which briefly appeared last year had been removed. The five coins with a face value of 91 cents were the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. The issue price of the set remained at a relatively steep $11.00.

All coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint and carried the “S” mint mark. Nearly all coins will be found with cameo or deep cameo finishes. An unknown number of 1983 “No S” Roosevelt Dimes were produced. This error occurred as it had in the past and created a premium for any discoveries. There are an estimate 3,500 1983 Proof Roosevelt Dimes missing the mint mark.

Separately, the U.S. Mint issued a 1983 Prestige Proof Set (Buy on eBay), which contained the five regular Proof coins plus the Proof 1983 Olympic Commemorative Silver Dollar. This prestige set was priced at $59.00 and sold 140,361 units. This was the first year of introduction for the expanded set.

The packaging for the standard 1983 Proof Set was changed. The design actually reverted to the style used in 1968. This consisted of the coins placed within slots of a black insert and sealed in clear plastic. There was an outer cardboard box blue in color which could be opened or closed with a flap at the top.
