1992 Silver Proof Set

The United States Mint expanded their offerings of collector products. Rather than remixing coins offered separately as seen with the Prestige Proof Sets, certain coins were struck in 90% silver rather than the regular copper nickel clad composition. The first such release was the 1992 Silver Proof Set (Buy on eBay).

All coins included in the set were struck at the San Francisco Mint. The Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, and Roosevelt Dime were struck in silver. The specifications for each coin matched those of the standards used for pre-1965 coinage. The Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel were struck in the standard compositions and are identical to those coins found in the regular Proof Set.

Because of the silver content, pricing for the 1992 Silver Proof Set was higher at $21.00 per set. Collectors were excited about the new offering and drove sales to a final mintage of 1,009,586. Collectors of particular coin series had to purchase the sets in order to acquire the silver versions of the coins for their sets.

The U.S. Mint also offered the so-called 1992 Silver Premier Set. This set contained the same coins as the 1992 Silver Proof Set, but the packaging was more ornate. This set was priced at $37.00 and sold 308,055 sets.

The packaging for the 1992 Silver Proof Set was themed in black, but otherwise similar to the packaging for the regular set. The coins were placed in individual spaces in a black cardboard. This was sealed within a plastic lens with the word “Silver” imprinted. The outer box was black and had silver printing “United States Mint Silver Proof Set 1992”.
