2008 Silver Proof Set

The United States Mint released the 2008 Silver Proof Set (Buy on eBay) on August 26, 2008. The annual set included a total of 14 different coins, with seven struck in a composition of 90% silver. Notably, this set included the final five coins for the popular 50 State Quarters Program and the last regular issue of the Sacagawea Dollar series. Pricing for the set remained unchanged from the prior year at $44.95 per set.

The silver coins included in the set were the 2008 State Quarters featuring Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii, the Kennedy Half Dollar, and the Roosevelt Dime. Collectively, these coins contain 1.338 troy ounces of silver. At the time of issue, this amount accounted for a relatively low proportion of the total value of the set.

The remaining coins of the 2008 Silver Proof Set were struck in their standard compositions. These coins included the four 2008 Presidential Dollars featuring James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren, the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, and Sacagawea Dollar.

The U.S. Mint offered a separate 2008 State Quarters Silver Proof Set. This set was priced at $25.95 and contained only the year’s 90% silver State Quarters.

The packaging for the 2008 Silver Proof Set was streamlined from the previous year. Rather than having two separate cardboard boxes contained in a slipcase, all three lenses of the set were placed into a single cardboard box which bore the familiar Statue of Liberty theme used since the beginning of the State Quarter series. The color scheme of the box was red to differentiate from the regular clad set, which was themed in blue.
