1976 US Mint Proof Set
The 1976 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) was released during the Bicentennial year of the United States. This is the regular clad composition version of the set, although a separate 1976 Silver Proof Set was also offered.
This set contained the Eisenhower Dollar, Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. The sets were offered at an original issue price of $7.00. The mintage for the set was a shopping 4,149,730, which remains the highest mintage for any Proof Set to this day. The increased interest was no doubt the result of people wanting to obtain a collectible from this important year. The sets also remained on sale until several years after 1976.
The 1976 dated Eisenhower Dollars came in two different varieties. All of the 1976-S Eisenhower Dollars contained in the 1976 Proof Sets are Variety 2, which have thin lettering on the reverse of the coin.
The 1976 Proof Set came packaged in a two piece plastic holder. The coins were placed within individual sealed rings against a red felt background. There was a black plastic outer cover which opens and closes. The outer cardboard box was colored black.
