1998 Proof Set

The 1998 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) was the final five coin set before the number of coins expanded in the following year with the launch of the 50 State Quarters Program. This year’s set also represented the final appearance of the Washington Quarter. The mintage for the set saw an increase from the prior year. The sets can still be found at affordable prices.

Each 1998 Proof Set contains five coins. These coins represent the Proof versions of each coin issued for circulation during the year. Coins are stuck at the San Francisco Mint, have the “S” mint mark, and have deep cameo Proof finishes. The coins included the half dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, and cent.

The U.S. Mint did not produce a Prestige Set for this year, although they did offer the 1998 Silver Proof Set and the 1998 Premier Silver Proof Set.

The packaging for the 1998 Proof Set continued the green themed format, but would be the last year before the design was overhauled. The coins were placed into individual slots of a green cardboard holder and sealed in a single lens. The holder was placed in a green card board box within silver printing and a single opening at the top.
