The 1987 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) saw a rebound in mintage from the prior year low. The sets contained five coins covering the half dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, and cent denominations. This had become the standard line up for the set from 1983 onwards.
The five coins were all minted at the San Francisco Mint and carried the “S” mint mark. Due to the improvements in minting technology, nearly all Proof coins encountered for 1987 will have a deep cameo finish. The original price of the regular Proof set was $11.00.
The U.S. Mint also offered an expanded version of the set known as the 1987 Prestige Proof Set (Buy on eBay). This set contained the five coins of the standard set plus the 1987 Constitution Silver Dollar. This set was priced at $45.00 and sold 435,495 units. The Prestige Proof Set format had remained popular since its introduction in 1983.
The packaging for the 1987 Proof Set remained unchanged from the prior year. The coins were placed within individual holes of a purple cardboard holder. This holder was sealed within a plastic lens, which came inside of a purple cardboard slip box.
