The 1988 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) saw its mintage recede back to the 3 million level after the brief spike experienced in the prior year. This was still above the recent low figure recorded in 1986. This year’s set contained five coins with a face value of 91 cents. This included the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. All coins are generally encountered with a deep cameo Proof finish.
The United States Mint once again issued an expanded Proof Set to give collectors another option. This 1988 Prestige Proof Set (Buy on eBay) contained the 1988 Olympic Commemorative Silver Dollar, along with the five standard Proof coins. This set was priced at $45.00 and sold 231,661 units. This marked a steep decline in prestige set sales compared to the prior years.
The packaging for the standard 1988 Proof Set remained unchanged from the few prior years. The five coins were placed within individual holes in purple cardboard holder. This was sealed between two plastic lenses to form a single holder. A purple colored outer box with silver printing “United States Mint Proof Set 1988” contained the holder.
