1962 Proof Set

The 1962 Proof Set (Buy on eBay) continued the format’s immense popularity with coin collectors by selling more than 3 million sets for the second year in a row. The total sales of 3,218,019 also represented another all time high for all Proof Sets released through that date. Collectors were sometimes purchasing multiple sets for their collections or for speculative purposes.

The five coins included in each set represented the one cent, five cent, ten cent, twenty five cent, and fifty cent denominations. Each Proof coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and only offered as part of the annual set.

The appearance of cameo and deep cameo Proof coins was generally becoming more common, but still represented the distinct minority. The vast majority of 1962 Proof coinage carries a brilliant finish.

Packaging used for the 1962 Proof Set was the same flat pack style that had been introduced in 1955. The individual coins plus a foil mint set were secured within individual compartments of a plastic cellophane pack. This pack was placed between cardboard inserts within a yellow Treasury Department envelope marked “1962-P.C.” in the lower left side corner.
